Programme Synopsis

There are many rules around what you can or cannot claim for business expenses. How can this knowledge help you reduce the amount of tax payable? What are the expenses that are claimable in the production of income? To make deep progress in your business, continuous research and development is a necessity, but do you know there are tax incentives that you can tap on?

From the chapter authors of Deductions against Income and Research & Development Deduction and Allowances of The Law and Practice of Singapore Income Tax (Third Edition), this upcoming session facilitated by Accredited Tax Advisor (Income Tax) Mr Harvey Koenig, Tax Partner, KPMG Advisory and Mr Jeremiah Soh, Senior Associate, Baker McKenzie Wong & Leow, will uncover the abovementioned and explore into the areas of optimising your business with deduction and allowances. Jeremiah is a Local Principal with the Tax and Trade practice group at Baker & McKenzie.Wong & Leow and has practised tax law for over 10 years. 

Jeremiah has assisted taxpayers in appeals before all levels of Singapore courts on complex and novel issues of tax law in several reported decisions. He is also experienced in tax advisory and consultancy work, having advised various domestic and multinational companies on a broad range of domestic and cross-border tax issues, particularly in the realm of business restructurings and legal entity rationalisations. Jeremiah has also been recognised as a Rising Star for Tax in the Legal 500.

Harvey is a Partner at KPMG in Singapore with more than 25 years’ experience in tax policy, tax compliance and consulting.

He assists clients with tax incentive and government grant applications across a wide range of programmes and industries, including energy and natural resources, telecommunications
and research and development. He also provides advice on intellectual property planning and the setting up of regional headquarters.

Harvey is a member of the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore’s Joint Study Group, which provides insights into the implementation of BEPS 2.0 Global Anti-Base Erosion (GloBE) Rules in Singapore.

His previous experience in tax policymaking enables him to provide clients with deep insights and a clear understanding of Singapore’s extensive tax incentives programme.

Mr Tan Kay Kheng

Kay Kheng heads the Tax Practice at WongPartnership LLP. His practice encompasses both contentious and advisory/ transactional work relating to income tax, stamp duty, property tax and goods and services tax, for clients across various industry sectors. He regularly appears as counsel in the Court of Appeal, High Court and the specialist tribunals (Income Tax Board of Review, GST Board of Review, Valuation Review Board and Land Acquisition Appeals Board).

His professional service includes being previously on the boards of the Singapore Institute of Accredited Tax Professionals (now known as Singapore Chartered Tax Professionals), the Accounting Standards Council, and as a divisional councillor of CPA Australia. He also taught as adjunct faculty at the SMU School of Law. He continues to serve on the Inquiry Panel and the Disciplinary Tribunal Panel for the legal profession, and as Vice-Chairman of the Law Society’s Compensation Fund Committee.
