Programme Synopsis

Death and taxes are the only certainties in life. For the latter, taxes are certain because tax authorities have a lot of power to collect them. Presumptions in favour of the tax authorities, the “best judgment” rule, power to collect regardless of taxpayer objections: these are but some of the challenges that taxpayers and their advisors face when engaged in a one-sided dispute with the tax authorities.

How then can a tax advisor develop a negotiation strategy to offset this imbalanced power position and achieve a good result for his or her client? Join Danny Quah, Litigation Director at TSMP Law Corporation, as he shares some practical tips that tax advisors can implement immediately to improve and refine their negotiation skills when negotiating with the taxman.

This 1.5-hour webinar will be an interactive one where Danny will expect his attendees to be engaged in breakout discussions and to participate actively in class discussions.

Programme Outline

  • Learn how to elevate one’s bargaining position to address the underlying power imbalance in negotiations with IRAS
  • Know how to reframe the disputed issues for more expansive negotiations
  • Understand how to adopt “interest-based” rather than “positional” negotiating techniques to achieve win-win outcomes for both parties

Mr Danny Quah
Litigation Director
TSMP Law Corporation

An advocate who was in the Overall Dean’s List in the National University of Singapore’s Law Faculty, Danny was NUS’ top tax law student and was nominated for the Lee Hsien Loong Award for Outstanding All-Round Achievement. His repertoire of experience managing tax disputes was amassed through hands-on experience in the tax authority, an international law firm and a boutique litigation outfit, with stints in “magic circle” barristers’ chambers in the United Kingdom.

In addition to maintaining a specialist tax disputes practice representing taxpayers in litigation against the tax authority, Danny is frequently appointed to act in commercial litigation requiring urgent injunctions and as debtor’s counsel in dire insolvency situations.  Known for his calm and caring demeanour to his clients, juxtaposed with his sharp courtroom advocacy and adroit control of difficult situations and negotiations, Danny is well sought-after and well regarded by his clients.

Danny speaks and publishes frequently on his key areas of practice in commercial litigation, insolvency and tax. He is often invited to speak on tax and tax-related subjects at the Tax Academy, the National University of Singapore and at other business conferences. He is known for his engaging and practical style of delivery.
