Programme Synopsis

This focused half-day workshop by STEP Singapore provides a comprehensive overview of critical topics related to the formation, operation, and management of private trust companies (PTCs).

Designed for professionals involved in trust and estate planning, compliance and governance, the workshop will cover the latest disputes involving PTCs, discuss AML compliance obligations and best practices in developing robust governance structures for PTCs.

Familiar with management reporting in both large MNC’s and smaller organisations, Peter has a unique skill base and understanding of the accounting and structuring requirements of large organisations, family offices and boutique enterprises.

Peter is a Fellow Management Accountant (FCMA/CGMA) and a Chartered Accountant of Singapore, with degrees in Economics and Economic History, and has wide-ranging experience working for family offices and major financial institutions. Peter is also TEP qualified and a member of the STEP Professional Standards Committee.

Afzal’s main areas of practice include commercial litigation and international arbitration.

Afzal has represented clients over a wide array of commercial and corporate disputes banking disputes, shareholder and joint venture disputes, trust disputes, employment disputes and libel claims. He has acted for statutory boards, public healthcare institutions and large corporates, including banks and institutional trustees.

He has appeared as lead counsel both in the High Court (General and Appellate Division) and the Court of Appeal of Singapore.
Afzal is qualified both in Singapore and in the state of New York.

Dr Genevieve Brunner

Dr. Genevieve Brunner is a seasoned compliance professional with over 15 years of expertise in Financial Crime Compliance (FCC) and Regulatory Compliance within the banking and trust sectors. She is the Head of Compliance and MLRO for BOS Trustee Limited and has played a pivotal role in designing and implementing the compliance framework (including higher risk assets and complex structures), enhancing due diligence processes, and fostering a strong culture of compliance.

With a Doctorate in Law from the University of St. Gallen (Switzerland) and an LL.M. from NUS, Genevieve brings legal and regulatory insights to complex compliance challenges.  She is a full qualified member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).

Ms Nancy Chien

Nancy has over 20 years of legal experience in both the private client area as well as the corporate sphere. Nancy advises ultra-high net worth families, family offices and intermediaries from all over the world on all aspects of private client structuring including the use of trusts and foundations, as well as related corporate law issues (including where such vehicles are used for philanthropic purposes).  She has considerable experience with high value and complex family governance structures, including ones where the founders wish to retain a degree of control over their family assets. 

Nancy also advises regularly on matters involving family disputes and disputes between trustee and beneficiaries.  She works closely with her litigation colleagues for matters which require a court application.  

Nancy is qualified in 4 jurisdictions, being Jersey, BVI, England and Wales and New Zealand. She is the only Jersey qualified advocate who can speak Mandarin.  Nancy also has considerable experience with employee incentive arrangements as well as regulatory matters affecting offshore vehicles and service providers, including FATCA, the common reporting standard (CRS), economic substance and disclosure requirements.

Kia Meng co-heads the firm’s Trust, Estates, and Wealth Preservation Practice, where he represents private trust companies, private banks, wealthy families, and UHNWIs on matters such as contested wills, probate, trusts, mental capacity under the Mental Capacity Act, testamentary capacity disputes, allegations of undue influence, defamation, asset/property allocation disputes, and estate administration. 

Kia Meng also advises on wealth preservation, family business structuring, investment immigration, family succession, and legacy planning. He works closely with private banks, family offices, trust companies, and real estate firms to advise wealthy families and high-net-worth-individuals on a spectrum of issues. A veteran lawyer with over two decades of experience,

Marcus has 30 years of experience as both an English trusts lawyer and as a former Cayman-based professional trustee and director on the Board of a number of PTCs. The main part of Marcus’s practice involves managing high value and often high-profile disputes involving wealthy global families and their associated offshore structures. He is also a leading expert on “stress testing” trusts which aims to prevent disputes arising.
